Spirit Airlines in Flight Experience

Spirit Airlines keeps things simple when you fly with them. They focus on being low-cost and straightforward. This helps keep ticket prices low, but most things on the plane will cost a bit more.

In Flight Dining

On Spirit Airlines, you won’t get free snacks or drinks during the flight. Instead, they have a variety of food and drinks available for purchase. You can use a debit or credit card to buy these.

Wi-Fi/Power and USB Charging Ports

The seats on Spirit flights don’t have USB power ports. Remember to bring a battery charger if you need one.

Entertainment

Spirit doesn’t give free movies or shows during the flight. Sometimes, on certain flights, you can buy a Wi-Fi package to stream entertainment. But it’s a good idea to load up your own movies or shows on your devices before you fly.

Spirit Airlines Boarding Procedures

Spirit Airlines has an easy boarding process with 4 numbered zones, along with pre-boarding and family boarding. Here’s who gets to board in each zone:

  • Pre-boarding: This is for passengers who need special help or have disabilities.

  • Zone 1: Passengers who paid for a carry-on bag.

  • Zone 2: People who bought Shortcut Boarding, have “Silver” or “Gold” status with Free Spirit, and those with the Free Spirit “Travel More World Elite Mastercard” and the Free Spirit “Travel Mastercard”.

  • Family Boarding: Families with kids aged 3 and under.

  • Zone 3: General boarding usually for the back half of the airplane.

  • Zone 4: General boarding usually for the front half of the airplane.

Important Note:

When you check in for your flight, if you haven’t paid for a seat in advance, Spirit will assign you one and put you in a boarding zone. Your boarding pass will show this info. Also, be aware that Spirit charges for printing boarding passes at the airport: $2 at their kiosks or $10 if an agent does it. To avoid these fees, print your boarding pass at home before coming to the airport.

Buy Your Tickets at the Airport

Buying tickets at the airport can save money because Spirit charges $16.99 per ticket each way when you buy them online. So, for a round-trip ticket, that’s an extra fee of $33.98. For us, going to the airport to buy tickets is still low-cost, even for just one person. If we know we have multiple flights coming up, we try to buy as many tickets as possible in one trip to DFW. DFW is one of Spirit’s main places, so their ticket counter is open almost 22 hours a day, 7 days a week.
